This morning I awoke to a chilly house. The floors were cold as I quickly tiptoed to the bathroom, covered in goosebumps and found my robe and house shoes. I love these crisp fall mornings. You can actually enjoy the outdoors without melting. It’s makes chili and soup the perfect dinner meal. It calls for a mug of hot chocolate and snuggling. It reminded me that I need to break out the winter clothing. Long sleeves and jackets.
This morning when I wrapped myself in my favorite heavy robe, it was heavenly. The feeling of warmth just helped me relax and allowed me to focus on the beauty of the morning.
As I was sitting on the porch, I thought that this robe reminded me of God’s love for us. He wraps His arms around us and brings us comfort, security, peace, and love. This feeling of peace that comes from being wrapped in God’s grace allows us to take our eyes off of the distractions of the world and focus on Him.
As I drank my hot chocolate, I wondered about this loving God of mine. I let Him down so often. Yet, he patiently draws me back to Him. I realized how badly I need to focus on what He expects of me. What He commands me to do in life. My heart felt the need to give back. As I opened my Bible, I came across this scripture:
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. —Colossians 3:12-15
The Bible gives us SPECIFIC directions of how to conduct ourselves each day. Just as He wraps us in His love, we are to wrap ourselves in mercy. Kindness. Humility. Gentleness. Patience. Wrap ourselves in love. ALWAYS be thankful. Forgive. Allow peace to rule our hearts. Make allowances for faults of others.
This is a tall order for such a sinful heart.
But with my eyes on the God…. The same God who knows my sinful heart better than I myself know it.
The God who knows the number of hairs on my head.
The God who has his name written on the palm of His hand.
I can do this!
I can live as He commands with His help. Today, let the words of this verse seep into your heart. Allow them to settle in your mind. Allow these words to light the path you walk. Wrap others in the comfort of God’s love through you. When you do, peace will reign in your heart. And that is a priceless gift!
Oh, and don’t forget to break out those jackets. =D
