Sticks & Stones….Baloney!!

26 Sep

The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that.
* Proverbs 29:25

The old saying sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me… It’s a fraud. It’s a flat out lie. Words do hurt. Words are powerful. Words can change the direction of our life. When we put all our trust in words that come from others, we are entering dangerous territory. In the age of social media, everyone has an opinion. As Christians, it is important to remember, it’s just that….an opinion. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of allowing others’ opinions about you to shape who you are. We replay words spoken about us, to us, and over us in our heads until it becomes what WE believe as well. If all the words that fell on our ears were positive and uplifting, this would be amazing. Sadly, it’s the negative we tend to replay more often in our mind. We want so badly to please others, to get their approval, we hang on to their words, their opinions. This is dangerous. The Bible says it can be disabling. And if you are ‘disabled in spirit’, it prevents you from being effective for God. The truth is this. You are a child of God. You are LOVED by Him every single day of your life. Through the good AND the bad, His love remains. You are so important to Him, he wants a personal relationship with you on a DAILY basis. He wants to converse with you always. You have problems? He ALWAYS wants to hear them, comfort you, and guide you out of them. You have an amazing opportunity to allow God’s word to shape you. If we allow God’s word, His presence in our life to define who we are and actually lived in that victory, our lives would be forever changed. Don’t give others the power to determine your path in life by directing your opinion of yourself. His opinion is the one that truly matters….and He thinks you are worth dying for!!
